Clostridium difficile (C. difficile)

Clostridium difficile (also called Clostridiodies difficile), or C. difficile, is a type of bacteria that produces toxins which can cause infections of the colon. C. difficile is estimated to cause a half a million illnesses in the United States each year. C. difficile infection (CDI) is a common infection characterized by severe diarrhea.

Supporting Patients with CDI

While many patients who become sick from CDI do so in the hospital, it is becoming more common to get CDI in the community setting. Some risk factors for getting CDI include current or recent antibiotic use, length of hospital stay & being over 65 years of age. Patients who get CDI have a 25% chance that it will come back, which is called recurrent CDI. Recurrent CDI is a challenge in treating CDI. CDI can result in serious disease complications including bowel perforation, toxic megacolon & sepsis, and in most serious cases, CDI can be fatal.

LeMed Pharmacy has extensive experience providing support services for patients suffering from CDI. We will work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are on the right medication to meet your needs. Some CDI medications can be costly, but we will work with your insurance company to obtain prior authorizations (if applicable) to have them covered under your benefit plan, and/or work with you to connect you to support groups and financial assistance programs as needed
