Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that causes inflammation of the liver. Acute infections can be with or without symptoms. About 20% of Hepatitis C patients can fight off the infection on their own, but 80% of patients can develop chronic infection that can lead to scarring of the liver (cirrhosis).
Living with Viral Hepatitis
The liver is an essential organ that performs many important functions such as filtering the blood of toxins, fighting infections, and making sure nutrients in the body are balanced. Viral hepatitis is a disease in which the liver is inflamed as a result of a viral infection. Hepatitis B and C are two of the most common types of viral hepatitis in the U.S. Hepatitis B is a chronic disease which can be managed with antiviral drugs. Hepatitis C can be treated and cured using antiviral drugs. Medications for Hepatitis B and C require close monitoring to ensure that they are working and adherence is key to successful therapy.
